THE NIGHT MONSTER

Author: James Swain
Genre: Mystery, Jack Carpenter Series #3
Published:  2010
Personal Rating:  2/5 (not enjoyable)
Format: Audiobook
Yearly Count:  58

Jack Carpenter, ex-cop and private investigator, (specializing in missing children) is determined to locate his daughter's basketball teammate who was abducted right before his eyes.

Ugh. I just reread my thoughts of the first two in this series, because I couldn't understand how I could dislike Jack Carpenter so much after loving him. Well, my memory was holding onto the first book. I referred to him as Jack #1 in my post of the second book, and I did really, really like that character. The second book (Jack #2) did not portray the same characteristics as Jack #1. I was curious as to who the third book would spotlight. Unfortunately, it was Jack #2 - an even more negatively developed Jack #2. I didn't like him AT ALL. He is a self-professed authority of abductions, and frankly, he's just a know-it-all.  His personality was not appealing.  He thinks all he has to do is say something and that makes it true.  Oi!

Also, we (Mr. Joy and I) didn't like the audio version. The reader's inflections made everything seem foolish. So why continue, especially when we discovered that we didn't like the reader within the first 5 minutes? We were on a weekend road trip. It was the only audiobook we brought along with us. :(

Lesson Learned: Always bring a backup, even if you are only going on a short trip.  And, this series is no longer an active pursuit of mine.

  3. {HUGS} Bummer indeed!! Definitely a lessons learned trip for you. Sorry the book was so icky, as well as the narrator. I keep finding that with the Lee Child 'Jack Reacher' series. I used to like the narrator and the series, but somehow it's begun to get on my nerves. At least the narrator has. Life is too short to read bad books or listen to bad narrators who read bad books.
And bring a back up audiobook on road trips. I keep a bag of audiobooks in my car for just such emergencies. And hope that they aren't all schtinkers.

  5. Vickie ~ Ahhh! I've only read one Lee Child. I want to read more, it just hasn't happened yet.

As for my lesson learned, well, I went on a road trip with my daughter. We wanted to make sure we finished an entire book, so we chose Best Staged Plans because it was only 6 CDs, and it had great reviews, and we both thoroughly enjoy HGTV. We listened and listened for 7 hours or so and kept thinking something was going to happen any minute. We plodded on through the whole book only to discover that nothing ever did!

Second lesson learned: It's okay to give up on a CD (even when it fits all the criteria) when you are not enjoying it. TRY ANOTHER ONE THAT YOU BROUGHT WITH YOU (because you learned that from lesson #1!).

Staci ~ This bummer was more about the ridiculous character. The narrator obviously caught the same bug and played him to the hilt.

As for audios in general, you are so missing out! One day you will find one that you'll love and realize the errors of your ways. ;)
